What I evaluated
- AnyDesk — good product, still subscription-based
- Chrome Remote Desktop — fine for simple cases, limited
- RustDesk — open source, self-hostable, cross-platform
The verdict
RustDesk won on every axis that mattered for my use case. The setup takes longer but you own it outright.
